Youth and activism: Youth Lead Fest, Mount Carmel Church, Mumbai

Bandra is quite the Goa of Mumbai. Be it its winding narrow roads, innumerable churches and even more chapels or just the overwhelming Catholic presence, the Queen of the suburbs does take you back to the land of sun and sand.

The Mount Carmel parish, near Reclamation, in that sense, is a typical Bandra neighbourhood. However not so on Saturday, April 4th. The parish was organising a mammoth event of sorts.

Called ‘Youth Lead Fest’, this one was an effort by the Church authorities and the parishioners to inculcate a deeper sense of political awareness among the youth, and more importantly, to make them vote.

Initially, what with the Church being so closely involved, the event seemed to have all the trappings of yet another gyaan session with advises galore. However Father Warner, the parish priest, was very quick in laying all doubts to rest. “Youth Lead is a mela for young people to encourage them to vote and get involved in society”.

That being so, he was quick to point out that the highlight of the evening was not really the various NGO stalls put up, but in fact the musical performance slated to happen through the course of the night.

The event was held on the Mount Carmel Church grounds. One step inside and all one could see was activity – and loads of it. Like promised, there were stalls set up everywhere giving the event the stereotypical air of a mela.

They were all there—NGOs like ‘Jaago Re’, ‘Agni’ and ‘Vote Indian’. And it wasn’t about boring one-person lectures on the importance of being involved in nation-building.

Instead, what one had was stalls where you could ‘Feed the hungry Politician’, essentially throwing garbage or whatever muck you could find, into the gaping mouth of a cut-out of a neta!

Full marks for originality! The stage was erected a little farther down and the proceedings began at 6:30 pm sharp. After a few mandatory introductory noises, the event was soon underway. There were a number of individual performances lined up, with quite a few of the local junta participating.

This meant a girl covering Nelly Furtado and a guy doing a Ronan Keating. Sweet. A couple of other pop renditions soon followed. Two members of the Mumbai band ‘Something Relevant’ were also slated to perform, but they not take the stage.

The sound has to come in for special mention. It would not be an understatement to say that the best of rock shows don’t have the kind of sound quality this event had. The equipment was all top notch and the lightings were an icing on the cake. Overall, the podium looked like it could host a ‘Live 8’ or even a Pink Floyd concert.

The highlight of the evening was definitely the ‘Aftertaste’ performance. Taking the stage at exactly 9:30 pm, this was one band that everybody was waiting for. One of the most successful alternative/funk bands from Mumbai, Aftertaste has a formidable reputation as far as live acts go. And this one was no different.

They started their act with their immensely popular original ’Bombay’. Keegan Pereira on vocals was his usual exuberant self, stomping on the podium and getting the crowd to near-hysteria. ‘Should we beckon on’ followed and had Ruell Barretto weaving magic on the bass guitar.

The crowd by this time had already worked themselves up to frenzy. ‘Sir Single’ then followed before the band wound up with ‘Operation Water’. The band proved why they are such a formidable live act right in front of an entire Catholic parish. This is one Indian band that can go a really long way if they just keep doing things the way they are.

Needless to say, by the time the 10 pm deadline was up, the venue resembled a just concluded rock show, with all the screams adding decibels to the already loud hysteria!
