What you can do to lower the cost of car insurance for young drivers

Part of the coming of age is the thrill and excitement of learning how to drive, and much to the dismay of many parents, with this new experience comes the added costs of paying for expensive car insurance. It’s no mystery that most accidents involve young drivers. Young drivers are much more likely to be involved in car accidents than older drivers for two main reasons:

Inexperience- Unfortunately, driving is a hands-on activity and one that must be practiced in order to be learned. This means that new young drivers take to Australian roads every day, many of whom are armed with just the basics of driving knowledge alone.

Distractions- Radios, friends, road signs, and mobile phones, are all some of the other things that are vying for the attention of young drivers while they are driving, and these distractions can lead to accidents.

What can you do to save?

Although there is little that can be done to totally offset the higher costs associated with car insurance for young drivers, drivers can get at least some relief in rates by doing the following.

• Take a safe driving course- Because the probability of young drivers being involved in accidents is so high, by taking a safe driving course it will prove to the insurance provider that individuals are less of a financial risk and better prepared than other young drivers.

• Get a family plan- By placing all family members, including young drivers, under the same plan families will experience a rate increase, but will still more than likely receive a better rate than if they purchased each plan individually.

• Drive only when necessary – Restrict the amount of time spent driving and drivers can opt for an occasional or infrequent driver plan, which can also help to lower the cost of the premium

• Opt for older model car - New cars are expensive to insure because they are expensive to replace. Driving an older car until the age of 25 allows time for insurance rates drop.

• Shop around- Don’t settle for the first quote received. Do some comparison shopping and see what else is available.

• Drive safely- Nothing trumps safety. The best discounts are always offered to safe drivers. Avoid speeding, reckless driving, and distractions and qualifying for a good insurance rate is a sure thing.
