The Story of Bingo

Bingo is a game of luck that has been around since the 1930s. It used to be a popular carnival game that, at one time, was known as “beano” which would work by players covering the numbers on their cards with beans. Rumour has it that one lucky carnival “beano” winner accidentally yelled out “bingo” and the name stuck. It has been called bingo ever since.

Bingo became a widespread phenomenon when churches realised they could host bingo nights as a way to raise funds for their parishes. You can still find churches that offer bingo, but today there are lots of other organizations who run bingo nights such as community halls, elementary schools, pubs, F.O.P.s, and a variety of charities. Most bingo sessions include several regular games that can be won by covering numbers in a straight line vertically, horizontally, and diagonally. Some bingo halls also accept four outside corners as well. Then there are usually at least two “jackpot” games that can be won by covering all the number on your card.

Of course, there are variations on the types of games played and the amounts of the prizes. Winning a regular game can pay up to $100.00 or more while “jackpot” games usually pay at least $300.00. The price to play bingo varies a lot, too, depending on how may cards you play. On average, it costs anywhere between $12.00 and $40.00 but it can cost a great deal more should you get hooked.

Bingo has become more expensive because many bingo halls are now offering bingo computers that cost about $20.00 to play. You can buy the computer to play along with your paper cards and what it does is gives you 54 additional cards that are played for you automatically, increasing your chances of taking home a jackpot. You don’t have to lift a finger, the computer even plays music to let you know if you’ve won. The only thing you have to do is shout out “bingo!” when the music kicks in!

It seems like bingo has always been a great American pastime, and while it may now be more difficult to find bingo halls or churches that host bingo because of the competition from online bingo, it’s a game that will be around for a long, long time.
