Today was the day for Two Thousand Five Hundred dollarsof the new diet plan products to be delivered. My wife was on the phone telling me that the UPS truck had pulled up and dropped off several boxes of the new super weight loss products. I was told it was best for me to sell retail and get the funds rolling in my new business venture.
Being at the house and putting everything together was now my goal. Tomorrow I would start taking the vitamins and loose some weight then everyone who wanted to loose weight would want to buy some from me. I eagerly got everything together and no matter where I was headed I made sure to have some products in my car. If you were breathing I was peddling, which is what the people who sponsored me said I should do. After that, I contacted all my friends and family for the same reason.
A Few Months Later...
I was walking around talking to myself about being a crummy salesman. My wife (bless her heart) was not cruel enough to say it, but her actions along with the look in her eyes made it clear, “I told you so.” I'm sure you have guessed by now that we were not short on dietary supplements.
What was equally staggering for me was that once my “warm market” contacts were done with me, so was my up-line. They avoided me and my questions. They were looking for fresh meat not an educated Network Marketer.
Then along came Magnetic Sponsoring with Mike saying that if he dumped a couple of tons of the best vitamins in front of my house (it's a personal thing for me) and I still couldn't make it work.
He has it right, doesn't he?
I would like to re-tell this event as it should have happened.
Let's say that I get in touch with a rep from a company I like that sells Super Diet Plan vitamins. When we talk together he goes over what the products are but I am surprised by a question I didn't expect:
Rep: “Dave, do you remember how it is that you found out about my company?”
Me: "Not at all it was in a TV/magazine ad."
Rep: “Do you have any kind of marketing experience?”
Me: "I'm not really sure what you mean.
Rep: "I'm just checking to see what experience you have." While it is true that a small percentage are able to make things work by only talking to friends and family. However, this is not the norm. The surest way to succeed is by generating leads through marketing, and turn yourself into someone that people want to follow in the process.”
Me: "I'm confused, what is it your getting at?
Rep: "I have a vested interest in my distributors and I want to see you do well, and you most certainly are able to! However, it is important that you understand that trying to tell everybody about the company first can make this a whole lot harder than necessary.
Me: "In what way?"
Rep: "It was you curiosity about me and my company that had you looking for me. I did not hunt you down. Do you think chances to make it would be better if centered on that same principle? What if you had people coming to you, asking you about your company and your company's opportunity? Do you think that generating an income would follow?”
Me: “Yes I do.”
Rep: " I'm glad to hear you say that, Dave."Your business is not the company or the product it is You and your ability to Market. Your first step in grasping this is best done by getting yourself a copy of Magnetic Sponsoring."
I can only imagine how much sooner the money would have started rolling in if I had learned this 20 years ago. Now I know marketing the right way and my wife no longer wants to say. “I told you so.”

I wish someone would have given me this information 2 decades ago. Attracting people to your business, instead of begging and hunting them down has made the difference I was looking for, and it all begins with knowing that friends and family just don't care about my mlm.
