Dispensaries are intended to provide for the safe sale and access of marijuana to patients who have received a medical recommendation for its use. In short, weed dispensaries are sprouting up anywhere and everywhere it's legal to do so. Currently, thirteen states have authorized the medicinal use of marijuana and are home to nearly eight hundred state licensed marijuana dispensaries. Dispensary medical marijuana sales are estimated to be more than a $1 billion dollar business.
New Mexico is a good example of a state currently experiencing a surge in dispensary openings. The state legalized medical marijuana in May 2008, and there are now over 200 operating dispensaries. Although most dispensaries in the state have complied fully with the law, there are some that have been shut down by New Mexico law enforcement for non-compliance.
Given that they are filling a medical need for qualified patients with valid physician recommendations, most neighborhood dispensaries in New Mexico have been well-tolerated. This tolerance is bolstered by the fact that in communities that house medical marijuana dispensaries, there has been no evidence of any increase in crime or subversive behavior.
Like any business (or any business trying to succeed), many medical marijuana dispensaries have engaged in marketing practices such as using print advertising, Internet advertising and coupons to generate business. They sometimes offer discounts for former military or free samples for new customers. This type of marketing combined with a wide inventory that includes different varieties of organic cannabis, hashish, THC extracts and edible items has resulted in many thriving businesses.
In California, the largest and most popular marijuana state, dispensaries are now offering delivery services, making the purchase and sale of medical marijuana even more convenient for qualified patients. While dispensaries are still the subjects of criticism by many public and social interest groups, according to recent law enforcement studies, there have been very few incidents of negative impact from a dispensary's presence or operation.
In thirteen states, patients who have need of medical marijuana now have safe and legal access to it as a result in the surge of medical marijuana dispensaries. If you live in a medical marijuana state, you must seek consult from a doctor before considering purchasing marijuana for yourself.
