Up until the last 40 years or so, you probably would not have been able to get your hands on some gay DVDs if your life depended on it. Gay magazines (not gay DVDs, because DVDs had not been invented yet), were sold out of dirty motel rooms in the middle of nowhere, peddled by shady men who disappeared into the night to go hit another city and spread their smut around. To find out about the sales of gay porn, you would have to know somebody who knew somebody, or read the back pages of muscle magazines and be able to decipher the code.
There was such a high level of secrecy surrounding the sales of gay magazines and films (again, not gay DVDs) because of the very strict anti obscenity laws that ruled the land. In fact, it was not until 1962 that the Supreme Court of the United States even agreed to hear a case involving pornography at all, much less gay pornography. In a groundbreaking ruling, the United States Supreme Court heard the MANual Enterprises vs. Day case and decided that partial or fully nude pictures of men were not obscene (and therefore legal to own, mail, sell, etc.).
Almost overnight, an industry that was previously underground came to light. While it would still be awhile before gay DVDs would hit the market (VCRs had not even been invented yet!), there were now more places than ever that one could watch some gay porn. Even whole movie theaters in major cities were getting in on the action, profiting off of huge blockbuster porn successes like Deep Throat.
To be sure, the gay DVD industry has a lengthy and interesting past. It is amazing how far people went to fight for their rights to watch all the gay DVDs they want. There were protests, demonstrations and thousands of gay DVDs produced. Eventually, the movement started catching the attention of straight people all over the country. Gays began to become an irreplaceable (and immovable) patch in the quilt of our nations culture. So, the next time that you go to pop a gay DVD into your player, think of how many people made sacrifices to ensure that you kept your rights and freedoms to watch whatever you want.
