Language Learning Success

Have you ever thought about trying to learn a language again? Perhaps your memories of trying to learn French or learn German from your schooldays are not particularly happy ones but, for a whole host of different reasons, you find yourself considering taking the plunge and giving it a go again.

The truth is, learning a language can be a lot of fun these days. Ideas about how to teach a language have moved on considerably in the last 20 years and now there are a good number of well-trained teachers in accredited language schools delivering excellent language courses to suit your pocket and needs.

But what might make a difference to whether you succeed this time? There are a number of elements that, when working in conjunction with each other, can contribute greatly to the success of your language learning experience. In fact, there is now a very solid body of research evidence to support the importance of the factors outlined below.

Motivation

To become a proficient fluent user of another language and really absorb that language, students must be truly motivated to do so. If you have just met the love of your life, who happens to be Spanish, then your desire to learn Spanish will presumably be very high. Similarly, if you have just landed a plum job in the Middle East then presumably, you will be highly motivated to learn Arabic.

Attitude

It also helps tremendously if you have a positive attitude towards the culture of the language you study. If you love all things Italian then to learn Italian will not seem like a chore, in fact you will perceive it as a great way of getting closer to the culture you love.

Exposure

Students absolutely require regular exposure to native speakers other than their teacher. So if you want to learn Japanese then it would be a great idea to not only take classes with a native speaker Japanese teacher but also, finances permitting, why don’t take a trip to Japan and do an intensive language course there.

Practice

Perhaps this is the most important aspect of language learning success. It is vital students must practice the target language as often as possible. So whether you want to learn English or learn Hebrew then seeking out opportunities to speak and use the language particularly in the company of native speakers is especially beneficial as the emphasis is then placed on conversation rather than rote memorization.
