I don't know anyone proud to be in debt or who got there on purpose. Increasing taxes, interest rates or getting laid off can cause usually good debtors to fall behind. Often if you call your creditors and tell them your situation, they will try and help you by lowering payments or interest rates. They lose the entire amount due if you file Chapter 7 or 13, so they prefer to just take a loss on interest. Sometimes companies will make a great payoff offer, accept this as soon as you can. The amount negotiated should be paid as soon as you can. You can owe less if you are willing to accept a payoff and many times the payoff won't adversely affect your credit report. Working with your creditors is better than avoiding them. If you want to show that you are responsible, you must try to pay. There is a book, "Debt Cures" by Kevin Trudeau, that talks about other ways to reduce your debt.
