Before 1962, when the Supreme Court of the United States heard the case of MANual Enterprises vs. Day, gay videos were illegal to make, buy, sell or own because of the strict obscenity laws that were put into place. However, in the MANual Enterprises vs. Day case, the Supreme Court ruled that pictures of naked (and nearly naked) humans on film were not to be seen as obscene material.
This means that the United States Postal Service (USPS) was now legally required to deliver the beefcake magazines that it had been marking as nonmailable because carriers found the material offensive. That one ruling chanced everything, and the floodgates were opened up. Because VCRs were not around yet, people would watch gay videos at actual movie theaters.
It may be hard to imagine now, but there were tons of movie theaters that would only play gay videos.
