The man, whose full identity has not been revealed, claims that the way that his hotel room had been decorated led to his failure at the casino. After winning four hundred thousand dollars in the casino, the man returned to his room to sleep. He then found that white and black sheets had been hung in his bedroom, and he claims that this was a deliberate attempt on the part of the hotel and casino staff to ensure that he lost a greater deal of money the next day that he had previously won.
Feng shui is an ancient Chinese art, which claims that the decoration of a room and the position of furniture within it can cause or prevent future happenings, or can greatly influence a person's mood. The man in this case was affected because he claimed that in Taiwanese feng shui black sheets are bad luck and represent loss, and this was unfluenced by the way that they were positioned in his room.
Although is seems unlikely that this claim of deliberate fixing is true, the story is made even more strange by the fact that the casino did agree to refund around one hundred thousand dollars, when they became aware of the customer's claims. No explanation has been given why, but there has been speculation that the refund was given not because the casino had deliberately caused the man to lose money, but because they had been less than sensitive with regards to his cultural beliefs.
