FDA warns Zicam users – Possible Link to Anosmia – Loss of Smell

These products are over the counter medications (which means they are available without a prescription) used to fight the common cold. They contain an ingredient called zinc gluconate, which many people believe is a problem. In September of 2003, lawsuits were filed against Zicam alleging that some cold remedy products were affecting people’s sense of smell. In 2006 the company reached a settlement agreement with 340 people.

Zicam is in the news again. In June of 2009, The FDA advised consumers to stop using certain Zicam cold remedy products due to a possible link to a condition known as Anosmia. This condition can lead to permanent loss of smell and taste. The manufacturer has voluntarily withdrawn the products from the market, but many people may still have the product in their medicine cabinet at home, so it is important that the news still gets out.

The FDA warning applies to Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs®, Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel® and Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs Kid Size ®.

Smell loss can have a huge impact on a person’s life in terms of dietary modification, lifestyle adjustments, and can even impact their ability to make a living.

Dietary Modification

When you lose your sense of taste and smell, it can have serious repercussions on your diet. Expiration dates on food must be carefully followed because you no longer have the ability to determine whether food is fresh or has spoiled. Many people experience weight loss because the flavor in food is missing.

Lifestyle Adjustments

Appetite isn’t the only thing impacted by smell loss. When you lose your sense of smell, you lose the ability to detect harmful or dangerous situations in your environment, and become more dependent on others. You are unable to smell toxic fumes or notice a gas leak in your own home. Many people are forced to replace their gas stoves for an electric model, and buy extra smoke detectors for the home in case a fire breaks out.

Occupational Changes

If you suffer from Anosmia or smell loss, your ability to make a living may be compromised. Many important jobs are closely linked to smell.

Psychological Impact
Last but not least is the psychological impact that smell loss can have on a person.
Little things that you take for granted, suddenly become a big deal. You are unable to detect body odor. You can’t smell your dinner burning. You start to become concerned about whether or not you have bad breath or if your clothes stink. You can’t enjoy pleasant scents either. You lose the ability to smell flowers or perfume or cologne or fresh baked cookies. Memory is also closely linked to smell. As a result of smell loss, you may start to feel ostracized from your friends and family.

I think I have Anosmia, How can I be sure?

There are several smell tests including: PEA Threshold Kit, The Pocket Smell Test, T&T olfactometer test, and the Alcohol Sniff Test. Your doctor might also want you to undergo an MRI or CT scan so she can rule out any chronic disease issues or injuries. If you have used Zicam cold remedy products and suffered side effects like loss of smell or loss of taste, you should consider contacting an attorney to discuss your legal rights and determine what the statute of limitations in your state is. Statute of limitations are time limits or deadlines which dictate how long you have to bring a claim. If you miss a deadline, you can be barred from brining a claim for compensation in the future.
