Zicam is in the news again. In June of 2009, The FDA advised consumers to stop using certain Zicam cold remedy products due to a possible link to a condition known as Anosmia. This condition can lead to permanent loss of smell and taste. The manufacturer has voluntarily withdrawn the products from the market, but many people may still have the product in their medicine cabinet at home, so it is important that the news still gets out.

Smell loss can have a huge impact on a person’s life in terms of dietary modification, lifestyle adjustments, and can even impact their ability to make a living.
Dietary Modification
When you lose your sense of taste and smell, it can have serious repercussions on your diet. Expiration dates on food must be carefully followed because you no longer have the ability to determine whether food is fresh or has spoiled. Many people experience weight loss because the flavor in food is missing.
Lifestyle Adjustments
Appetite isn’t the only thing impacted by smell loss. When you lose your sense of smell, you lose the ability to detect harmful or dangerous situations in your environment, and become more dependent on others. You are unable to smell toxic fumes or notice a gas leak in your own home. Your doctor might also want you to undergo an MRI or CT scan so she can rule out any chronic disease issues or injuries.
